I’ve never once ‘played’ them on a keyboard, I’d have to go back and quantize it and since I tweak all the velocities anyway, it’s just quicker to use the mouse. Once you’ve got a pattern going, you can copy and paste all over the place. I actually do all my programming with a mouse, one hit at a time.

MIDI packs are cheap, you can get a TON of them on. The Groove section in each (where all the drum MIDI’s are located) makes searching for things a breeze, theres a Tap-2-Find feature where you can type in a basic pattern and it’ll display all the MIDI files that are similar. EZD gives you some great sounds but not nearly as tweakable.

SD3 is basically the full blown version of EZD and gives a lot more options for mixing/tweaking the drum sounds. It’s really hard to beat EZDrummer/Superior Drummer for their ease of use AND the sounds. Here’s an example of a backing track I recently put together to demonstrate how much easier it is to visualize and tweak each drum part when you separate each part out onto its own midi track: It’s so much easier to visually adjust (or copy/paste) each pattern that way, and much easier to tweak velocity changes. I would also recommend laying each drum part down on its own track. Your midi controller (so long as it’s not a cheap POS) will be responsive to changes in the pressure with which you tap the pads/keys, but be aware that for the most realistic results, you usually have to manually adjust velocity after the midi notes are laid down. I would recommend learning how to lay down your own grooves, however. These VSTs have grooves that you can drag and drop into your DAW. Then buy a realistic drum VST, like Superior Drummer 3 or Addictive Drums 2. I like the Novation LaunchKey Mini, but there are other good options out there.

Could I play the drum tracks from the audio output plugged into the Focusrite and record a drum track directly like that? I understand it will just be a signal like recording voice or guitar and I wont have any control over individual toms, snare etc as you would with a midi drum track.Ĭlick to expand.Buy a midi controller with pads.

It looks to me that setting up drum tracks in Cakewalk is doable but preferably using an electronic keyboard (The musical kind) so you can get sensitivity control? I understand this is not possible using your computer keyboard or mouse? Is that correct?Ī) Is it possible to download a drum machine type thing as an add on to Cakewalk that already has basic beats ie no need to create your own drum tracks?ī) Alternately I already have a lot of drum tracks recorded in a Boss type home studio (BR600). What I am interested in is recording backing tracks, mainly Drums and bass. I am using current version of Cakewalk now through a Focusrite Scarlett Solo. Dabbled around with Cakewalk and Garageband years ago but things seem very different now. Furthermore, no security is promised or implied by The Gear Page owners, administrators, or moderators.
